Humanitarian Award Winner

Village Historian David Sadler has been chosen as this year's Humanitarian Award winner for the Canastota Chamber of Commerce. Sadler was honored at the Annual Dinner on March 29, 2008.

Sadler was appointed the Village Historian in 1998 and research Historian for Lenox in 2003. The Town of Stockbridge appointment came in 2007.

As Historian for the Village of Canastota and Town of Stockbridge and research Historian for the Town of Lenox, Sadler has been responsible for securing state historical markers, commemorating local events in history including the Amelia Earhart marker. His very first project was listing all the Mayors or past Presidents for the Village of Canastota. He has researched the Lenox Anti-Slavery Society and a state historical marker was placed at Quality Hill two years ago. More recently, the historical marker commemorating the centennial of the Great Auto Race of 1908 was unveiled at the Municipal Building. Sadler will be credited in a book and movie on the Great Auto Race of 1908.

David also is responsible for adding more than a dozen names to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. Another research project Sadler has been working on for several years is obituary indexes for Canastota, Oneida, Morrisville and the Town of Eaton. Sadler also compiled a booklet in 2003 on the dedication of the community clock located at the Municipal Building. He researched and co-authored an article that appeared in a national historical publication on local legend Old Phoebe.

His newest research project travels back to 1907 when Madison County Under Sheriff Michael R. Mooney was shot twice. He survived his injuries but died 6 years later as a result. Sadler is waiting for Mooney's election so he can be placed on the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.

David Sadler has worked various jobs including farming, factory work and truck driving. He has been employed at Wal-Mart in Oneida for the past 11 years. He is married with two children and four grandchildren. Sadler currently resides in Clockville.
