Traffic Alert: Bicyclists in Canastota for “Tour the Towpath”

This event has ended

CANASTOTA, NY – Bicyclists from around Central New York and beyond will visit Canastota as part of the annual “Tour the Towpath” event this weekend.

“Tour the Towpath” is a 42-mile bicycle ride from Rome to Syracuse along the Old Erie Canal. The 2022 ride will take place July 30-31, with an overnight stop in Canastota the night of July 30.

Due to this event, residents are advised to be aware of increased bicycle traffic in the downtown area, particularly from Chapel Street to Hickory Street. Riders will enter the village from East Canal Street over the course of a few hours late Saturday morning through the afternoon. They will ride to West Hickory Street, where many will camp for the night at the firemen’s field across the street from Zems. The riders will depart Sunday morning, headed toward Syracuse.

In the interest of safety, anyone who plans to be in the village Saturday afternoon and evening, especially those going to Zems or the village pool, should keep an eye out for these bicyclists. Your help and consideration will be greatly appreciated.
