Eclipse in Canastota 2024
CANASTOTA, NY – Due to the upcoming Solar Eclipse on April 8, additional traffic is expected in and around the Village of Canastota as sightseers travel to upstate New York to be in the path of totality.
Canastota is expected to be on the very edge of the path, with 99.87% of the sun covered at its peak, according to Eclipse2024.org.
The eclipse will begin in Canastota at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Monday, and will end around 4:35 p.m. The peak totality will occur at approximately 3:24 p.m.
Due to the expected increase in visitors to our area, particularly along the Thruway, Route 5, and Route 13/Peterboro Street, the Canastota Fire Department plans to staff the fire house on E. Center Street all day so they can respond to calls in a more timely fashion. The Canastota Police Department will have officers on patrol to monitor traffic. Please be aware of our first responders and make room for them on the roads to they can get to the scene as quickly and safely as possible.
The Recreation Park on N. Main Street, along with other public areas, will be available for the public to view the eclipse. However, due to the continued chilly overnight temperatures this time of year, the restrooms at the Rec Park are not yet open for the season and will NOT be available on eclipse day. The village office and municipal building will remain open for regular hours that day.
The Canastota School District previously announced it will be closed on April 8 for the eclipse.
Anyone with any questions can contact the village office at (315) 697-7559 or village@canastota.com.
