Canastota Recreation youth basketball 2024-25

The Canastota Recreation Commission is pleased to once again offer youth basketball opportunities for the 2024-25 season.

Evaluations for competitive basketball in the Central New York Junior Basketball League will take place on October 29th & 30th, 2024 at the Canastota High School’s Dimao Gym.

– 3rd/4th grade evaluations will be from 6-7pm, while 5th/6th grades will be from 7-8pm each night.

– If your child cannot make it to one of their grade’s time slots, please email recreation@canastota.com and let us know ahead of time.

These evaluations will be considered tryouts for our competitive travel teams. In years past we have been able to field multiple teams for multiple skill levels. Unfortunately this year, between gym space availability and lack of volunteer coaches, we are unable to offer as many teams.

With all of these circumstances, we have to change the way we are organizing the program this season. The CNYJBL is competitive and the other programs in the league also hold tryouts. As a result, the more experienced and skilled players will be selected. Third graders are allowed to try out, but if a third grader and someone of an older grade level has the same score, the older child will receive priority. This is an unfortunate reality of the lack of gym availabilities we have at our disposal this season.

We will continue to offer our Saturday morning Skills and Drills Basketball Program over the winter for younger players (1st-4th grade) or those who do not make one of the travel teams.

Regardless of skill level, every child will have an opportunity to play basketball in some form this season.
