UPDATE: Canastota flood recovery information
UPDATED WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24 – 11:00 AM
The Canastota VFW will remain open until Friday to serve residents who need food, shelter, or air conditioning after Sunday’s storm.
National Grid will be distributing ice and water at the VFW through late Wednesday afternoon.
Red Cross staff will be going door-to-door checking in on affected residents.
PREVIOUS UPDATES:
On June 22, 2025 parts of the Village of Canastota sustained significant damage from an overnight storm and subsequent flooding, particularly in the areas closest to the Canastota Creek. Numerous basements were flooded and power was turned off to several neighborhoods in the village.
The Canastota Fire Department has been working since Sunday morning to assess the damage and assist affected residents with pumping out their basements.
A portion of Hickory Street between Peterboro and Main will be closed indefinitely while crews repair a sinkhole caused by a sewer main leak.
As of Tuesday morning the following resources are available to the public:
The Canastota VFW on Canal Road is serving as a cooling center and shelter for residents displaced by the flooding or anyone who needs a place to get out of the heat. The Red Cross will on site to assist. Please note that primary elections are also taking place at the VFW on Tuesday.
The Canastota American Legion on Rasbach Street will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to serve meals and help people cool off.
The Canastota Public Library on W. Center Street will be open as a cooling center from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Canastota village pool on Spencer Street will open at 1:00 p.m. for anyone who wants to beat the heat. Pool fees have been waived for Monday and Tuesday, June 23 and 24.
