Notice of Special Election: Moving Village Elections to November
CANASTOTA, NY – At its regular meeting on November 5, 2025, the Village of Canastota Board of Trustees adopted a resolution to move the date of elections for village offices from March to November to coincide with general elections.
This move was undertaken at the request of the Madison County Board of Elections in an effort to reduce costs, increase voter turnout, improve convenience for voters, and bring village elections in line with those on the federal, state, county, and town levels.
The adoption of the resolution, which can be read below, triggers a public referendum. That special election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at the Canastota-Lenox Municipal Building on S. Peterboro Street.
The Village of Canastota holds its elections in even years. The next village elections are currently scheduled to take place in March of 2026. The terms for two village trustee seats and one village justice seat are set to expire. If this measure is approved, village elections would move to Election Day on November 3, 2026 and those terms would be extended to match.
Anyone with questions regarding this resolution and special election is encouraged to contact the Canastota village office at village@canastota.com or (315) 697-7559.
