Main Street bridge over Erie Canal to close for 4 weeks (UPDATED)
UPDATE (1/29/24): The NYS DOT says S. Main Street will now be closed on Tuesday, January 30 due to high water levels in the Erie Canal.
UPDATE (1/23/24): The NYS DOT says the South Main Street bridge repair project will begin on Monday, January 29. S. Main St. over the Erie Canal will be closed for approximately one month while repairs are underway. Signs will be posted with detour information. See below for more details.
UPDATE (1/4/24): The NYS DOT says due to forecasted snow and cold temperatures the S. Main Street bridge repair project has been postponed for at least two weeks. A new start date has not yet been announced.

Traffic Detour for Bridge Maintenance Over Old Erie Canal in the Village of Canastota, Madison County
The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that a portion of South Main Street between South Canal Street and Canal Street in the Village of Canastota, Madison County, will be closed to traffic for approximately four weeks beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, January 8, weather permitting. The closure is necessary to facilitate bridge maintenance on South Main Street over the Old Erie Canal.
Motorists will be encouraged to follow a signed detour around the work zone utilizing Canal Street, State Street, Buck Street, and West Center Street.
Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
