Summer 2025 Job Opening: Lifeguards

The Village of Canastota has openings for seasonal part-time lifeguards to work at the municipal pool on Spencer Street this summer.

Pay is anticipated to be $16.50 per hour for lifeguards and $18.50/hour for water safety instructors, pending approval of the 2025-26 village budget by the Board of Trustees.

The pool will be open daily from mid-June through the end of August.

LIFEGUARD (SEASONAL)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve supervision of swimming activities at a swimming pool or bathing beach.  The incumbent performs routine patrol work at the facility and is responsible for enforcing safety rules and regulations.  The work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level administrator with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

– Watch and patrol bathing beach or swimming pool and surrounding area, maintaining and aiding in the safety and welfare of patrons;
– Under supervision of a Water Safety Instructor, assist in teaching swimming to both swimmers and non-swimmers, and lifesaving junior lifesaving and senior lifesaving to intermediate and advanced swimmers;
– Coordinate swimming activities with other aspects of a general recreation program;
– Applies resuscitation techniques and administers first aid;
– Keeps the swimming area free of glass and other debris
– Maintains order and discipline and enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries;
– Assists in the maintenance and repair of pool and beach facilities and equipment;
– May conduct water tests including Bromine, Ozone, CO2, and PH;
– Maintain records and prepare written reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the techniques of lifesaving and first aid; good knowledge of rules and regulations governing the use of a swimming pool or bathing beach; good knowledge of how to conduct water tests including Bromine, Ozone, CO2, and pH; ability to respond quickly, calmly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to maintain records; good observation; mental alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The State Sanitary Code establishes the minimum qualifications for Lifeguard positions.  The code provides the qualifications and training requirements for the different levels of lifeguard supervision.  These levels are based upon the type of water facility involved.

Supervision Level IIa Lifeguard – Pool Only

Must be at least (16) years of age* AND possess a current American Red Cross Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer, CPR or equivalent certification; AND possess a certificate in basic lifeguarding from a recognized certifying agency acceptable to the State Health Commissioner.

Supervision Level IIb Lifeguard – All still water, including pool, lake, beach, but no surf water

Must be at least 16 years of age AND possess a Current American Red Cross Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer, CPR or equivalent certification; AND possess a current lifeguard training certificate from a certifying agency acceptable to the State Health Commissioner. For Beach ONLY: Must ALSO possess a waterfront module or a lifeguarding certificate in waterfront lifeguarding.

Supervision Level III Lifeguard – Spa and wading pools

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age AND possess a current American Red Cross Community CPR or equivalent certification; AND is competent to implement the facility safety plan; evaluate environmental hazards; use lifesaving equipment; and undertake bather crowd control.

Supervision Level IV Lifeguard – Pools less than or equal to 2,000 square feet surface area AND water depth less than five feet.

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age AND possess a current American Red Cross Community CPR or equivalent certification.

*Note: Fifteen (15) years of age is acceptable if employed at a facility where a supervisory lifeguard is present.
