Canastota flood mitigation project
CANASTOTA, NY – A multi-agency effort is underway to mitigate future flood risks after flooding ravaged several dozen homes in the Village of Canastota this past June.
On June 22, 2025, more than 100 homes in Canastota were damaged by flooding caused by excessive rain that fell overnight. In the course of investigating the damage it was determined that a significant amount of dead trees and other debris had collected in and around the creeks on the north side of the village, causing water to back up.
Several local and state agencies have collaborated on a solution to the problem in the hopes of preventing flooding of that severity from happening again. Representatives from the Village of Canastota, Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, Town of Lenox, Madison County Highway Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New York State Thruway Authority met in September and a plan was formed to remove debris from the Canastota Creek.
Madison County Soil and Water provided funding for the work, which began on November 19. The Canastota Codes Enforcement Office and Department of Public Works, as well as Madison County Emergency Management, have provided additional resources. The first phase is taking place this fall along the Canastota Creek between N. Main Street and Hardwood Island Road, with a second phase tentatively scheduled for the Spring of 2026.
