Village trash and recycling codes
CANASTOTA, NY – The Village of Canastota would like to remind residents of the village codes regarding the collection of residential trash and recyclables.
According to Section 155 of the village code, property owners and/or residents are required to store their household waste in containers made of metal or rigid plastic, with lids that fasten to the containers. These trash cans should be stored indoors or behind the main building on the premises. Trash cans should not be larger than 33 gallons or 75 pounds.
On the day of your weekly pickup, garbage must be placed at the curb in a container as described above. Trash bags are not to be placed at the curb without a can. This is important in order to keep animals out of your trash and to make the trash more visible to Bliss Environmental collection crews – especially on a snowy day.
Recyclable paper/cardboard and containers must be separated and placed to the curb in the green Madison County recycling bins. Residents may request up to two bins per household from the village office or Madison County Department of Solid Waste.
Trash cans and recycling bins should not be placed at the curb prior to 3:00 p.m. on the day prior to your pickup day, and should be brought back inside by 11:59 p.m. on pickup day.
The village has separate regulations for brush and yard waste pickup. You can read them here.
Anyone with questions may contact the village office at (315) 697-7559 or village@canastota.com.
