Canastota Police remind residents to be wary of online fraud
CANASTOTA, NY – The Canastota Police Department is reminding residents to be careful when registering for village-sponsored events, as scammers are impersonating village employees online to try to steal your money.
Last fall, police issued a warning after a scammer tried to solicit registrations for the fall craft fair. Police say similar scams are still out there, and residents should use caution and only interact with village employees when paying to participate in village-sponsored events.
A reminder that:
– The village does not accept online payments. (PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, etc.)
– The village does not accept payments over the phone.
– Village representatives will communicate through official Canastota.com email addresses and “Village of Canastota” social media accounts.
If you suspect you’ve been the victim of fraud you are encouraged to call the Canastota Police Department at (315) 697-8888 or email village@canastota.com.
