Traffic Alert: Peterboro Street pedestrian safety project

PRESS RELEASE
6-17-22

CANASTOTA, NY – The New York State Department of Transportation has advised the Village of Canastota that a curb extension project on Peterboro Street in the heart of the village’s downtown district will begin on Monday, June 20.

The DOT will be constructing two curb extensions, otherwise known as “bump-outs”, at the intersections of Canal Street and Peterboro Street as well as Center Street and Peterboro Street. These bump-outs are designed to improve pedestrian safety by widening the sidewalks and allowing for a better view of oncoming traffic. They also decrease the amount of time a pedestrian must spend crossing Peterboro Street.

Work will begin on the Canal/Peterboro intersection first, then move to the Center/Peterboro intersection upon completion.

The DOT says traffic will continue to flow and will not be detoured while construction is underway. The project should take 1-2 months to complete.

Anyone with questions can email village@canastota.com.
